How to Keep Your Money Safe

At Yoakum National Bank, keeping your money safe is our top priority. We are FDIC-insured and offer helpful tips on how you can be proactive in keeping your money secure online.

What is the FDIC?

The FDIC, also known as the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, was created in 1933 as part of the Banking Act signed into law after the Great Depression.

FDIC-insured financial institutions guarantee your money is safe up to $250,000 per account. It’s also possible to secure more than $250,000 depending on the type of account and ownership category you fall into. Before opening a checking or savings account, look for the Member FDIC logo on your bank’s website.

You can learn more about the coverage offered by the FDIC when you visit them online.

Tips for keeping your money safe online

When you shop online, remember to use your credit card as opposed to your debit card. This rule is important because, if a bad actor steals your checking account information through your debit card, you’re at a greater risk of losing funds immediately. With a credit card, you have additional fraud protection. For example, you may have extra time to dispute fraudulent charges and withhold payment, allowing you to keep your funds intact.

When shopping online, look for secure sites that have a web address beginning in “https.” The “s” stands for secure.

You should also try to avoid suspicious websites, apps, and spam emails when possible. If anything looks unusual, don’t open, or click on the content.

And as always, use strong passwords and change them often. Avoid birthdays and the names of your loved ones, including pets. These are commonly used and easily hackable mistakes.
